Class Description
All levels of painters will be challenged by this course in the essential elements of painting people. Devoted to
proportions and structure, the class will begin with black and white compositional sketches. Realistic skins tones and
values will "carve" the features in the final painting.

Although formal portraiture will be discussed, this workshop will appeal to anyone who wants to use relaxed faces and
figures as design elements within a composition. We will be working from a model indoors and outdoors (if the students
choose to) discovering and controlling relative lighting and color differentials.

Students are encouraged to bring a variety of sketches or photos, which could be developed into a painting. We will
discuss what makes "good" reference material and how one can enhance the material already on hand. Students are
encouraged to bring in "In progress" paintings for critique throughout the week as time permits.

The instructor will paint one or two full demos and multiple mini-demonstrations throughout the week as needed.
Students may choose to bring a variety of media.
