Laurie Humble is the author of Watercolor Depth and Realism. Her watercolors have appeared in more than Fifty National and International Exhibitions garnering numerous awards. She holds signature memberships in seven watercolor societies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Texas State University.
Her work was the subject of a feature article, in American Artist Magazine, and has appeared in Southwest Art, and International Artist. Laurie’s work appeared on the cover of the October 2008 issue of Watercolor Artist, accompanied by a feature article. Her work is included in the new book, Splash 10, a North Light publication, as well as the F & W media 2009 calendar.

Day 1- A.M. – Discussion of the five critical techniques which can be used to create or increase a sense of visual depth in any painting, any style, and any medium. Students will then work on small exercises I have devised to teach the basics of these techniques. P.M. - Continuation of the exercises
Day 2- A.M. - Discussion of the difference between studio, and en plein air techniques. We will explore ways to save whites in both scenarios, through an exercise. Discussion on shadows and color usage, followed by another exercise P.M. - Afternoon plein air painting – landscape
Day 3- A.M. - Plein air painting- landscape P.M. - Back in the studio, students will work on increasing depth in their plein air paintings by applying the 5 techniques learned on day 1
Day 4- A.M. - Discussion on how to make a still life different and interesting, followed by an exercise designed to help students exaggerate the color they see in reality. Students will learn tricks to painting chrome (and other shiny stuff!) PM- Continuation of AM activities
Day 5- Students have the chance to bring in past work for critique and discussion. They will have the opportunity to re-work past paintings using the 5 techniques they have learned, increasing the visual depth, and strengthening the focal point. Any time remaining will be spent on completing other work done in the workshop, and question & answer time.
