    “It is my absolute
    joy to watch
    students make
    those tiny
    breakthroughs
    that begin to build
    confidence and
    leave a lasting
    desire to continue
    their exploration. "
Few things are more suited for
    travel than a sketchbook, pencil,
and a small watercolor palette. In
    addition to traditional plein air
    work, Iain will focus on
    strengthening your skills using
these tools to record your life
    through sketching in watercolor.
    The sounds, smells, sights, and
    people you come across will
remain fresh in your mind as you
look over the work you have
done on site. There is no better
    way to relive your memories
    than a well used sketchbook.

Class Outline

The focus of this workshop will be to dispel any hesitance you may have regarding working outside and
demonstrate the way Iain has recorded his travels for the last 30 years. “I can think of nothing more precious to
me, beyond my family, than my sketchbooks. They allow me to relive memories on a level that no camera can ever
reproduce. 10 minutes on site can take you back in time in the most wonderful way.” Each drawing and painting
done on site will return you to that time with more clarity, a sense of place, and help in enhancing the sense of play
that travel assuredly produces.

Through daily demonstrations Iain will show you his techniques for working en plein air and how to travel
comfortably collecting memories that will last you a lifetime. There will be plenty of time to work at the easel if you
wish as well as the sketchbook. From 5 minute gesture sketches to more comprehensive studies Iain’s methods will
improve your comfort working outside and most importantly how that will improve your work when you return to
    your studio full of ideas.
